The Bellagio is among the most opulent resorts on the Strip, but it's also home to one of the best free attractions in town. The Fountains of Bellagio perform a sensational water ballet on the eight-acre lake in front of the hotel. The show is created by 1,200 water cannons that create swaying plumes of water spanning 100 feet across and soaring 240 feet into the air. Music accompanies the show and changes with every performance. You might hear Gene Kelly's 'Singin' in the Rain' or Aaron Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man.' Whether it's Strauss or Sinatra, the choreography of the fountains to the music always seems in perfect sync. The show is fun during the day but magical at night, when dramatic lighting adds another dimension to the experience. The Fountains can be enjoyed from the sidewalk on Las Vegas Boulevard, but are also worth viewing from one of the Bellagio restaurants. For a bird's-eye vantage point, try the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower, across the street at the Paris resort.

I was there on the opening weekend for Bellagio a few years back and although the restuarants had their problems, the veranda overlooking the fountains was spectacular. The lake was gorgeous as well as the fountain and music show. Sipping drinks on the veranda was quite romantic and I had quite a nice time chatting and getting acquainted with a rather conceited and snooty woman whose arrogance seemed to melt in the Bellagio atmosphere. Bellagio did infuse some sense of romance into this woman, and she let her hair down for a few hours at least. I have to tell you that Bellagio has special charms so bring your special someone there and treat her to a beautiful environment that neither of you will forget.
